Laurentian University is a mid-range bilingual university in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, founded on March 28, 1960. While mainly concentrating on undergraduate programs, Laurentian also is home to the east campus of Canada’s latest medical school—the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, which started in 2005.
Its school of Graduate Studies provides a number of graduate-level degree programs. Laurentian is the biggest multilingual provider of distance learning in Canada.
The university’s campus is situated on the south side of Ramsey Lake, south of Greater Sudbury’s downtown core in the Bell Grove area. The city’s Idylwylde golf course borders the university campus to the west and the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area borders the campus to the south. The Lake Laurentian Conservation Area comprises a network of tracks used for running, mountain biking and nordic skiing.
The university has a confederated school system, like that of the University of Toronto. The school also has two distinct student unions (along with the part-time and graduate student associations). Candidates are alloted a student association when they enrol for their programs; the Francophone Students Association (AEF) is for francophone candidates, while the Students General Association (SGA) is for both Anglophone candidates and francophone candidates.
