Goodnews for fans as club sack , appoint Quique Setien as manager

Ernesto Valverde have been sacked by FC Barcelona as the club have now announced the appointment of new coach, Quique Setien until 2022. The 61-year former Real Betis coach would now take charge of the Blaugraunas on a two-and-half year deal.

Although having won 97 games, drawn 32 and lost just 16 while in charge of Barcelona, Valverde found life at Camp Nou difficult as he was under constant criticism from fans for his unconventional style that cost them crucial games such as the 2018 Champions League quarter finals second leg game against AS Roma, the 2019 Champions League semi finals second leg game against Liverpool and most recently, the Spanish Supercoppa semi final clash against Atletico Madrid in Saudi Arabia.

“61 year old Quique Setién will be the new FC Barcelona coach. The man from Cantabria in the north of Spain comes to Barça after having had spells at Racing Santander, Poli Ejido, Logroñés, Lugo, Las Palmas and Betis, his previous club in the 2018/19 season. Throughout his career he has been a proponent of possession based, attacking football that has been attractive to the fans.” Barcelona said in a release published on their website on Monday night.

“As a player Setién was a midfielder who excelled with Racing Santander over 12 seasons in two separate spells. He also featured for Atlético Madrid where he won the Spanish Super Cup as well as enjoying spells at Logroñés and Levante.”

Setien previously led Real Betis to spectacular victories over Spanish giants Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid last season, but he was sacked in the end.

Barcelona are currently ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga on goal difference and are through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
