Queen Elzabeth II, Brtan’s longest-regnng monarch and the naton’s fgurehead for seven decades, has ded aged 96, Buckngham Palace sad on Thursday.
Her famly gathered at her Scottsh estate after concerns grew about her health earler on Thursday.
The Queen came to the throne n 1952 and wtnessed enormous socal change.
Wth her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prnce of Wales, wll lead the country n mournng as the new Kng and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.
In a statement, Buckngham Palace sad: “The Queen ded peacefully at Balmoral ths afternoon.
“The Kng and the Queen Consort wll reman at Balmoral ths evenng and wll return to London tomorrow.”
All the Queen’s chldren travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medcal supervson.
Her grandson, Prnce Wllam, s also there, wth hs brother, Prnce Harry, on hs way.
Queen Elzabeth II’s tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerty, the transton from empre to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the UK’s entry nto – and wthdrawal from – the European Unon.
Her regn spanned 15 prme mnsters startng wth Wnston Churchll, born n 1874, and ncludng Lz Truss, born 101 years later n 1975, and apponted by the Queen earler ths week.
She held weekly audences wth her prme mnster throughout her regn.
The Queen was born Elzabeth Alexandra Mary Wndsor, n Mayfar, London, on 21 Aprl 1926.
