Top meda personalty Daddy Freeze, Actress Monca Frday and other Ngerans have reacted over federal government proposal to ban the consumpton of anmal skn, locally known as ponmo, n the country to revve tanneres.
Muhammad Yakubu, drector-general, Ngeran Insttute of Leather and Scence Technology (NILEST), Zara, had sad ths n Abuja on Sunday. He sad the ltgaton was necessary to revve the comatose leather ndustry n the country.
He sad the habt of eatng anmal skn, whch has no nutrtonal value, should be stopped to save the ndustry and boost the naton’s economy. The drector-general added that the nsttute, n collaboraton wth stakeholders n the ndustry, would approach the natonal assembly and state governments to brng out legslaton bannng “ponmo” consumpton.
“To the best of my knowledge, Ngerans are the only people n the world that overvalue skn as food, after all, Ponmo has no nutrtonal value. At one pont, there was a moton before the two chambers of the natonal assembly, t was debated but I don’t know how the matter was thrown away,” he sad.
Accordng to hm, the consumpton of anmal skn s partly responsble for the present comatose state of tanneres n Ngera.He also sad the current Natonal Leather Polcy had addressed some fundamental problems of the sector.
“If we get our tanneres, our footwear and leather producton workng well n Ngera, people wll hardly get pomo to buy and eat. When mplemented fully, t would turn around most of the comatose tanneres and gnger greater output n producton.”
Yakubu further appealed to stakeholders to support the legslaton and the natonal leather polcy to revve the sector.
However, reactng to ths va comments on Instagram blog, Daddy Freeze wrote, “I love the fact that our country s run by utter genuses.”
